Randy Vining
Home Base: Georgia
Favorite Ocean Kayak and why: If I had to choose just one of my 16 boats, it would have to be the Trident 13. It is stable enough to stand and cast a fly rod. It tracks great and is fast for a 13’ boat. It has a lot of features like the rod pod, sonar shield and transducer compatible scuppers that make it the near perfect fishing kayak.
About Randy: Randy “River Pirate” Vining has lived in Middle Georgia all his life. As a young boy he followed his Grandfather around Georgia fishing lakes, ponds, rivers, creeks and even the occasional trip to the salt water. You could say he was raised to be a fisherman. “My Grandfather always told me God loves fishermen, so I wanted to grow up to be a fisherman.” says Randy. While the Pirate (as he is known to his friends) will fish for anything, his love is the shoal bass found in the rocky rivers of Middle Georgia. “Those rocky rivers are the reason I started fishing from kayaks and canoes” said the Pirate. “No other type of boat can stand up to the constant beating on these rocks in the rivers I fish.” It was not until fishing from kayaks that the Pirate realized they can be used in any type of water. “If I can walk to the edge of the water, I can fish in it from a kayak.” the Pirate continued. “It has become a passion. Give me a fly rod, a kayak or canoe and a river full of shoal bass and nothing else in life matters.” The Pirate says that being on the Ocean Kayak Prostaff allows him to travel the Southeast doing seminars about fishing from kayaks and spreading his passion for the sport. “I almost love that as much as fishing.” he says with a smile. A member of the Flint River Keepers Organization in Georgia, Randy is proud to be one of the original members to bring this organization to fruition. “Without the protection of our beautiful rivers, where would I fish?” questioned the Pirate. As a guide on the rivers of middle Georgia, the Pirate gets to share the beauty of these rivers as well as his passion for fly fishing from kayaks with his clients.
