Favorite Ocean Kayak and why: I have a few favorites due to the fact that each excels in certain fishing techniques and circumstances. The Trident 11 is my choice for rivers due to its maneuverability. The Ultra 4.7 for large bodies of water where a fairly large distances will be traveled. And of course, the Big Game when fishing for big fish.
Other Gear: A rudder, Humminbird Fishfinder, Scotty accessories, G. Loomis Rods, Daiwa baitcasters and Shimano spinning for freshwater, Van Staal spinning and Avet conventional reels for Saltwater. My equipment selection process and philosophy is really quite simple, it hinges on top quality, flawless functioning under extreme conditions and my confidence in its use.
About Lucian: A Captain (Master 25 Ton) on the Great Lakes and kayak fishing guide, he has been fishing out of a kayak since 2003 and numerous other vessels since he could walk. He has given kayak fishing seminars at many outdoors shows and local dealer events. He is key member of the Michigan Kayak Fishing online community. He has also written articles for Kayak Angler magazine as well as chapter on fishing in Michigan in the book “Kayak Fishing the complete guide”.
Paddling/ fishing season here on the Great Lakes for me, usually starts at ice out, although I have been known to drag my kayak over ice to get to the open water. The season usually ends when ice has covered productive water. Thus, when I can't fish on the Great Lakes it is prime time to head to warmer water. The winter season usually includes one road trip to Florida.
Kayak Fishing philosophy: Be prepared for whatever species you may encounter and is a willing combatant even if those species are not the glamorous and popular ones. If they are cooperative and offer good sport that’s all that is required.
