Howard McKim
Home Base: Ketchikan, Alaska
Favorite Ocean Kayak, and why: Prowler 13 - Makes a great guide kayak, fits on the power boat, and holds a stack of shrimp pots. Also, in summer these kayaks are in the water 24/7, with lots of rain, for four months straight, and there hasn't been any water in the hulls.
Other Gear Used, and why: Daiwa Millionaire for all around; it's the sweetest reel ever. Shimano Trinidad 14 for halibut; high ratio, strong, and compact. Shimano mooching reel; for serious fun. Seeker rods. Werner paddles. Emperor hooks. Anything waterproof and rustproof.
About Howard: Howard, already a kayak angler, wanted to escape the rat race of California, so he decided to head north several years ago to where the sport began. Of course, when it began it was for sustenance not for sport. Spending time kayak fishing the pristine waters of Alaska for fish like barn door Halibut, Salmon, Lingcod and a variety of rockfish, Howard wanted to introduce the area to other kayak fishermen and started Ketchikan Kayak Fishing. KKF offers private guided kayak fishing tours on the protected water of Alaska's Inside Passage. The fishing grounds are surrounded by lush rainforest making it a kayak fishing paradise. Catching fish truly is a bonus as you explore the rainforest, view whales, sea lions, and majestic eagles in the place where kayak fishing was born.
Favorite fish species, and why: Big Halibut, because every one is an adventure!
