Greg Bowdish
Home base: Sarasota, Florida
Favorite Ocean Kayak and why: Without a doubt it is the Trident 13. Because I have done so much sea kayaking, I have always been fanatical about having a good paddling boat. Not only does the Trident 13 have some of the most innovative features on the market like the Rod Pod and Sonar Shield, but also it is a joy to paddle and easy to stand up in. I do put a rudder on all my fishing kayaks, but it is not for paddling purposes. A rudder allows you to pole sitting down across the ultra-shallow grass flats while fishing for redfish and snook. Our fish can get into water that is too shallow to paddle and can can be so spooky that standing is not an option. And because the rudder is foot-operated, I can setup a drift in the wind and can cast a fly rod while easily controlling my course.
Other equipment: Echo fly rods, Airflo fly line, Extrasport PFDs, Carlisle Paddles, Hummingbird fish finders, Plano tackle boxes, Malone kayak racks, Engle coolers, Riptide and Culprit soft plastics, and Eureka tents.
About Greg: Originally from Georgia, Greg Bowdish moved to Florida over a decade ago to be closer to the amazing shallow water fishery the state has to offer. He spent several years building fishing boats before becoming a full-time fly fishing guide. It wasn’t long before his enthusiasm and skills for teaching fly casting made him a popular speaker at clubs and fishing shows. He is also a popular outdoor writer and photographer and his work has been featured in both regional and national fishing publications. Several years ago, he wrote about his passion for a quirky new sport called kayak fishing which, much to his surprise, was about to become one of the hottest sports in the country. He found himself at the crest of an exciting wave.
His love of kayaking grew from several guided sea kayaking trips he took during college, firmly implanting a love for paddle sports alongside his love for fishing. Many years later, when he walked into a kayak shop and saw a modern sit-on-top fishing kayak, it was love at first sight. Needless to say, he left with two fishing kayaks on his roof and he hasn't looked back since. 2004 marked a turning point in Greg's career when he was asked to be a part of the Ocean Kayak Pro Staff - a position that not only would draw from his skills as a kayak angler, fishing guide, and boat builder, but give Greg access to some of the top names in the kayak industry in terms of paddling and fishing pros, leading kayak designers, and other iconic figures of the sport. Among these was paddling guru Ken Whiting and kayak fishing legend Jim Sammons, both of whom Greg had the pleasure of working with for a segment of the first Kayak Fishing: Game On DVD.
Wanting to focus more on his writing, Greg is presently devoting much of his free time to finishing up his first novel which should be out in mid 2012. He has also written a screenplay and will start another when the novel is finished. Though he no longer guides anglers, he is always out on the water paddling and fishing and still guides paddling trips around his home in Sarasota, FL. He also just teamed up with Dirty Boots Adventures, a company dedicated to helping people explore the outdoors safely and confidently. Through Dirty Boots, he will be teaching outdoor classes, leading trips to new and exciting places, and indulging in one of his all time favorite activities, kayak camping.
