Jim Salazar
Home Base: Palos Verdes Peninsula, and Southern California
Favorite Ocean Kayak, and why:
Prowler 15T for Fishing and Hoop Netting Lobsters and Crabs. It’s a very well thought out fishing platform with the Humminbird Sonar/GPS and transducer configured right into the mold. I also like the Malibu II XL for clients while guiding hoop net trips. It’s an extremely stable and safe platform for the new kayaker.
Other Kayak Gear Used: Lendal Paddle, Extrasport PFD, Humminbird Sonar/GPS, Shimano Reels, Promar Hooping Gear and Landing Nets, AHI Sabikis and Squid Jigs, Scotty Rod holders and accessories.
About Jim: Jim has been a licensed DFG kayak fishing guide for fifteen years. He now teaches kayak fishing and lobster hoop netting, in addition to his day job as a Key Grip in the motion picture business for the last forty years. Jim also works with Promar and AHI giving seminars about lobster and crab hooping as well as developing new and innovative hooping and fishing products, like the Sabiki Stick and the Eclipse Hoop Net. Besides writing an occasional Hoop Net article for Western Outdoor News, Jim is also the author of a book titled “Hoopin’ It Up: A Guide To Lobster and Crab Hoop Netting”, currently in its second edition of printing.
Jim was featured in a Travel Channel “Cash and Treasures” episode filmed at Catalina, California. He also appears in a Hoop Net instructional video produced by Inside Sportfishing.
Jim was born in Los Angeles and is a second-generation Californian. He started fishing and diving with his father Jim Sr. along the Baja coast at an early age. Their many trips took them to Ensenada, San Felipe, and as far south as Gonzaga Bay and the Bay of L.A.
